COVID-19 CASES JUMP TO 8,23,626 AND TOLL SOARS TO 40,598 GLOBALLY

The Corona Virus (CPVID-19) pandemic situation turned worse globally, with the confirmed cases across the globe jumping to 8,23,626 and the death toll soaring to 40,598 in the 206 affected countries and territories.  

According to the latest update from the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases is increasing in thousands and the confirmed death toll is shooting up in hundreds.

In India, the number of confirmed cases rose to 1,637 and the death toll increased to 38 on 1st April.  During the last 24 hours, 376 new confirmed cases and 3 new deaths have been reported. 132 persons have been cured /discharged from the hospitals after recovery.

In Telangana State, the number of confirmed cases was 77, with 14 patients discharged and 8 deaths. 

Globally, European region continued to be the worst-hit, followed by American region, Western Pacific region, Eastern Mediterranean region, South-East Asia region and African region. WHO Risk Assessment at global level remained very high.   

No new countries/territories/areas reported cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.  As mentioned by the Director-General, ensuring free movement of essential health products is vital for saving lives and curbing the social and economic impacts of the pandemic.

WHO is working intensively with partners to increase access to life-saving products, including diagnostics, PPE, medical oxygen, ventilators and more. WHO Operations support and logistics continues to monitor critical markets and, in partnership with the Pandemic Supply Chain Network, has increased engagement and coordination with private companies.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, OSL has shipped more than 8,00,000 surgical masks, 54,000 N95 masks, 8,73,000 gloves, 15,000 goggles and 24,000 face shields to 75 countries. OSL has also shipped COVID-19 testing kits to 126 countries. (eom)
