GLOBALLY COVID-19 CASES SOAR TO 12.55 MILLION AND DEATH TOLL RISES TO 561,617

The Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic situation remained grim globally, with the confirmed cases across the world soaring to 1,25,52,765 and the death toll reaching 5,61,617 in the 216 affected countries and territories, according to the latest update from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Globally, American region continued to be the worst-hit with 65,40,222 confirmed cases and 2,83,357 deaths. Europe came next with 29,07,654 confirmed cases and 2,03,285 deaths. Eastern Mediterranean region reported 12,71,338 confirmed cases and 30,652 deaths.

South-East Asia region’s tally stood at 11,30,247 confirmed cases and 28,640 deaths. African region registered 4,61,296 confirmed cases and 8,092 deaths. Western Pacific region recorded 2,41,267 confirmed cases and 7,578 deaths. WHO Risk Assessment at global level remained very high.

WHO has published an Emergency Global Supply Chain System (COVID-19) catalogue listing all medical devices, including personal protective equipment, medical equipment, medical consumables, single use devices, and laboratory and test-related devices, which may be requested through the COVID-19 Supply Portal. The catalogue represents an initial prioritized selection of items and subject to constant review.

WHO surveyed networks of laboratories to map out global animal laboratory capacity around the world to potentially help with accelerating vaccine and therapeutic evaluation.

The WHO Regional Office for Africa calls for equitable access to future COVID-19 vaccines in Africa, as researchers around the world race to find effective protection against the virus. (eom)
