COVID-19 CASES SOAR TO 47.54 LAKHS IN INDIA AS DEATH TOLL RISES TO 78,586

India witnessed a big spurt with 94,372 fresh COVID-19 positive cases reported on Sunday, taking the country’s cumulative cases to 47,54,356. The death toll rose to 78,586, with 1,114 fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours.

Incidentally, India has moved to the second place now in total number of COVID-19 positive cases among the countries across the world. It ranks next to the United States in overall number of cases. India now ranks third in total number of fatalities, after the United States and Brazil, which occupy the top two slots. Moreover, the daily tally of cases and deaths in India is the highest among all the countries across the globe now.

Meanwhile, India continues to report high number of recoveries exceeding 70,000 every day. Focussed, collaborative, responsive and effective measures of early identification through high and aggressive testing, prompt surveillance and tracking coupled with standardised high quality clinical care have in tandem led to this result.

As many as 78,399 recoveries have been registered in the last 24 hours in the country. With this, the total number of recoveries has touched 37,02,595 taking the Recovery Rate to77.88 percent.

Almost 58 percent of the new recovered cases are being reported from five States, viz. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. Maharashtra continues to lead with more than 13,000 recoveries while Andhra Pradesh has contributed more than 10,000 to the single day recoveries.

Of the 94,372 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, Maharashtra alone has reported more than 22,000 cases followed by Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka with over 9,000 cases each.

Nearly 57 percent of the new cases are reported from five States. These are also contributing 58 percent of the new recovered cases.

The total number of active cases in the country stands at 9,73,175 as on date, accounting for 20.47 percent of the total confirmed cases.

Maharashtra has more than 2,80,000 active cases followed by Karnataka with  more than 97,000 cases.

Five States account for 60 percent of Total Active cases in the country viz. Maharashtra (28.79 percent), Karnataka (10.05 percent), Andhra Pradesh (9.84 percent), Uttar Pradesh (6.98 percent) and Tamil Nadu (4.84 percent).

Of the 1,114 deaths registered in the past 24 hours, Maharashtra has reported the maximum number of 391 deaths, followed by Karnataka with 94 deaths, whereas Tamil Nadu has reported 76 deaths. The case fatality rate further dropped to 1.65 percent.  (eom)
