COVID-19 CASES JUMP TO 54.87 LAKHS IN INDIA AS DEATH TOLL RISES TO 87,882

India witnessed a big spurt with 86,961 fresh COVID-19 positive cases reported on Monday, taking the country’s cumulative cases to 54,87,540. The death toll rose to 87,882, with 1,130 fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours. The case fatality rate stood at 1.60 percent today.   

Incidentally, India has moved to the second place now in total number of COVID-19 positive cases among the countries across the world. It ranks next to the United States in overall number of cases. India now ranks third in total number of fatalities, after the United States and Brazil, which occupy the top two slots. Moreover, the daily tally of cases and deaths in India is the highest among all the countries across the globe now.

Of the 86,961 new cases reported in the last 24 hours in the country,  76 percent are concentrated in 10 States/Union Territories. Maharashtra has alone contributed more than 20,000 and Andhra Pradesh has contributed more than 8,000.

Of the 1,130 deaths due to COVID registered in the past 24 hours, 10 States/UTs accounted for 86 percent. Maharashtra reported 455 deaths followed by Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh with 101 and 94 deaths respectively.

India has crossed the significant landmark of more than 80 percent (80.12 percent) national Recovery Rate. On a continuous stretch of high recoveries, India has also reported more than 90,000 recoveries for the third day in succession. As many as 93,356 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours.

In all, 12 States and UTs have registered Recovery Rate more than the national average. Also, 79 percent of the new recovered cases are from 10 States/UTs. The total recovered cases are close to 44 lakh (43,96,399) today. India tops the global figure of total recoveries. It accounts for more than 19 percent of the world total.

The active cases, numbering 10,03,299 today, accounted for 18.28 percent of the total confirmed cases. (eom)
