There was a big spurt in COVID-19 cases for the 34th consecutive day with 209 fresh cases reported in Telangana on Thursday, taking the State’s total to 4,320 confirmed cases. The death toll rose to 165, with nine fresh fatalities reported in the last 24 hours. In all, 1,993 patients were discharged after recovery so far and 2,162 active confirmed cases are in the hospitals now, as per latest official status update.
According to the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, as many as 208 fresh cases were reported among locals, taking the sub-total of this group to 3,871. Only one fresh case was reported among the migrants, deportees and foreign evacuees and their sub-total increased to 449. Thus, the total confirmed cases tally included 3,871 locals, 207 migrants from other States, 212 deportees from other countries and 30 foreign evacuees.
The Director PH& FW said that in view of Covid-19 global pandemic, the State of Telangana has strengthened surveillance, contact tracing and containment measures against the possible spread of disease.
The new positive cases reported on Thursday included 175 in GHMC area, 10 in Medchal district, seven in Rangareddy district, three each in Mahbubnagar and Karimnagar districts, two each in Warangal Urban, Asifabad and Siddipet districts and one each in Mulugu, Kamareddy, Warangal Rural and Siricilla districts.
It is observed that there is a surge of cases in most of the districts across the State. In view of the surge, the public is requested to be alert and self-vigilant for any signs and symptoms of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) OR Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI).
In case of onset of any symptoms of ILI OR SARI, the public are requested to immediately contact the nearest government health facility without any delay. The public are requested to avoid self-medication, quacks, faith healers and any other indigenous therapy.
Early reporting to the health facility will enable prompt diagnosis and management. Seeking medical care soon after the onset of symptoms is vital to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with Covid-19. People are requested not to step out of the house unless essential.
In the past few days, there has been a surge of new cases in GHMC area. It is once again reiterated that all the non-pharmacological preventive measures have to be implemented strictly. Vigorous contact tracing, strict quarantine measures (home and government), risk assessment, judiciously assessing the area of containment, strict perimeter control have to be taken up. At this juncture, risk communication plays a major role in behavior change thereby mitigating further spread of infection.
The lockdown has been relaxed since the 16th May 2020. It is being observed that there is a lot of mobility and movement of people from all walks of life and of all age groups. There is a surge of positive cases since the past few days. For ensuring safety, the authorities have issued guidelines for strict compliance. Vulnerable Age Groups comprising children below 10 years of age and elderly people aged above 60 years are advised to stay indoors and avoid going outdoors. (eom)
