GLOBALLY COVID-19 CASES SOAR TO 11.33 MILLION AND DEATH TOLL MOUNTS TO 532,340

The Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic situation remained grim globally, with the confirmed cases across the world soaring to 1,13,27,790 and the death toll reaching 5,32,340 in the 216 affected countries and territories, according to the latest update from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Globally, American region continued to be the worst-hit with 58,20,840 confirmed cases and 2,65,024 deaths. Europe came next with 27,91,160 confirmed cases and 2,00,238 deaths. Eastern Mediterranean region reported 11,70,720 confirmed cases and 27,566 deaths.

South-East Asia region’s tally stood at 9,47,519 confirmed cases and 25,036 deaths. Western Pacific region recorded 2,26,882 confirmed cases and 7,489 deaths and African region registered 3,69,928 confirmed cases and 6,974 deaths. WHO Risk Assessment at global level remained very high.

COVID-19 has changed our life: disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and personal protective equipment (PPE) have become tools in the fight against virus transmission. Most of these products contain chemicals. A webinar is being held tomorrow during which speakers will share the preliminary analysis of the chemical impact [of using these products] and outline recommendations to ensure the safety of chemical products being used to stop the spreading of the virus.

As a major United Nations forum prepares to assess progress towards a fairer future for people and the planet, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that each of the Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. (eom)
