India witnessed a big surge in COVID-19 positive cases, with a single-day record 14,516 fresh cases reported on Saturday, taking the country’s cumulative tally to 3,95,048. The death toll rose to 12,948, with 375 fatalities in the last 24 hours.

As many as 9,120 patients recovered from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. A total of 2,13,831 patients have been cured of COVID-19 so far. The recovery rate increased to 54.13 percent. Currently, 1,68,269 active cases are under medical supervision, according to an update from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The trend in the daily numbers shows an increasing rate of recovery, and an increasing gap between active and recovered cases. The increase in the proportion of recovered cases is a demonstration of India’s strategy of timely management of COVID-19.

Proactive measures like implementation of lockdown, sensitization of the general public to COVID appropriate behaviour by Government of India in coordination with the States/Union Territories, have significantly restricted the spread.

The lockdown provided a breathing space for the government to ramp up the testing facilities and health infrastructure which ensured improved recovery rate by timely detection and clinical management of COVID-19 cases.

This increasing gap is thus a result of the timely, graded, pre-emptive approach of the government to contain COVID19 and its implementation by countless frontline workers.

The testing capacity for detecting the novel Coronavirus in infected persons in the country is continuously being ramped up. The country now has the capacity to test 3 lakh samples per day. The total number of samples tested thus far is 66,16,496 with 1,89,869 samples tested in the last 24 hours.

A network of 974 labs has been created in the country as on date. This includes 715 labs in the government sector and 259 in the private sector. The tally comprises Real-Time RT PCR based testing labs: 543 (Govt: 350 + Private: 193); TrueNat based testing labs : 356 (Govt: 338 + Private: 18) and CBNAAT based testing labs : 75 (Govt: 27 + Private: 48).(eom)
